The Vision for All Saints' Church is to be "overflowing with God's love and healing power." One vital dimension of that Vision is the provision of compassionate care to individuals and families when they are in crisis. As a church, we reach out in Jesus' Name and in the power of the Holy Spirit to those in need: the sick, the bereaved, those who have given birth, the elderly and the home-bound.
The Pastoral Care Team (PCT) reaches out on behalf of All Saints' to link those who are in need with the many forms of support available within the church family. In short, the PCT learns the parishioner's needs and mobilizes the church's response. This response begins with prayer but may also include visitation, meals, transportation, home communion, etc.
The Pastoral Care Team is composed of All Saints' members who are mature Christians and blessed with gifts of the Holy Spirit such as mercy, pastoring, and healing. They are entrusted with the responsibility to represent the Body of Christ, faithfully demonstrating the love of Jesus in tangible ways.
The clergy of All Saints' minister directly to the people of God. However, because it is not God's plan for the clergy to do all the ministry, they work closely with the members of the PCT. But the PCT is not merely a "back-up" to the clergy. The Bible makes clear that the job of the clergy is not to try to do all the ministry but to equip the people of God to do it. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians says that Jesus "gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry" (4:11-12). It does not say that in churches under a certain size, the clergy should not equip the saints but should do it all themselves! Equipping the saints is God's method for all churches.
The Pastoral Care Team is a new way of ordering this important ministry within All Saints'. The PCT has been developed through a pilot program in the past year, during which many things were learned about how to effectively offer support to people facing a wide range of situations.
As All Saints' grows and God's Vision becomes reality, the Pastoral Care Team will grow, as well.
